Councilmember Michael Brown pledges support
July 13, 2010Yesterday we had lots of visitors. Reporters with the AP, Fox 5, the Michael Eric Dyson Show, the Washington Afro, City Paper, WPFW, and several bloggers. (The AP came back this morning, as did NBC 4.) Police officers with the Third District came by four times. Dozens of neighbors rolled through to say hello, take pictures and even play raquetball. There are so many uses for vacant lots! And at 8pm many more came out for a screening of Chocolate City, about the resident-led struggle against displacement by Arthur Capper/Carrolsburg tenants.
Councilmember Michael Brown also dropped by for a visit, to pledge his support for one of our demands – to change the city’s definition of “affordable” housing to reflect what working families actually earn in the District. Councilmember Brown has had a busy summer, having spearheaded an effort to shore up the affordable housing trust fund and other safety net programs, and we look forward to him continuing to build leadership on this issue.
