Confusion
July 12, 2010On Saturday dozens of people built a Tent City on city-owned Parcel 42 at 7th St NW & Rhode Island Ave NW. We entered through the back, by the apartment/office building, and exercised our right to housing.
Why wait for the Mayor to make another promise he can break when we can create the intentional community we need?
Lots of people have come by to offer support. One neighbor walked up Sunday to donate a just-purchased picnic umbrella, saying, “housing is so expensive here. You’re doing the right thing.”
We were shortly visited by officers with the MPD Third District and Special Operations. They gave us until Monday to get out – apparently confused about who the land belonged to. They said the city government. We said, the city’s been holding onto it for us – taxpayers own it, and the government holds it in trust. Mayor Fenty doesn’t seem to need it, since he keeps breaking his promise to fund affordable housing here. The land has been vacant for years – we’re putting it into use.
This morning 3D officers came by three times to talk to us, but we’re still holding on.
We’ve been camping out the last two nights – will you join us tonight?
