Tent City events tonight postponed due to heat

July 23, 2010

Tent City residents have been boldly enduring the heat. Today’s record temperatures, however, have made it difficult for them to host people for tonight’s planned events.

Tonight’s celebrations have been postponed indefinitely. Once the heat goes down, plans will move forward. Please stay posted for more!

We got a lot of press this weekend!

July 19, 2010

Tent City has been here for over a week now. The press definitely took notice this past weekend! Here’s where Tent City got play:

WTOP ran an update this morning

The City Paper weighed in with a little analysis

DJ Eurok posted interviews with Tent City activists

Tent City DC by djeurok

And Councilmember Brown made the connection to DC’s “affordable” housing crisis on The Kojo Nnamdi Show:

Tent City hosted a rally by the Statehood Green Party and others yesterday, pictures soon. There’s now also a library at Tent City. If you have spare children’s books, we’re accepting donations.

Affordable for who?

July 16, 2010

There have been conflicting media reports about whether Mayor Fenty ever signed anything guaranteeing truly affordable housing at Parcel 42 (meaning: for families making less than 50% AMI, or less than about $50,000/yr). Yesterday reporters from the City Paper and Street Sense, among others, were shown the original Memorandum of Understanding and Tiered Income Pro-Forma agreed to by (then-)Deputy Mayor Neil Albert. The Pro-Forma makes clear that the housing would be priced for families making from 20%-50% AMI, and would include three- and four-bedroom units.

And in case there were any doubt, DCmud points out that the official DC government website for Parcel 42 still maintains the new housing will be 100% affordable for families making less than 50% AMI.

Parcel 42 handed over to the community

July 16, 2010

In recognition that many more Shaw & DC residents have come out in recent days to create an intentional community at Parcel 42, last night ONE DC members, board and staff officially transferred coordination of the site occupation to a broader group of residents – still including ONE DC members.

And no offense to the videographer, but the scene yesterday was a little less dramatic, and more serious, than that cinematic soundtrack.

Community & generosity

July 15, 2010

We’ve been pleased to see so many Washingtonians — longtime and new — come together to build community, make art, play drums and guitars, screen movies, and talk about how to create change that bypasses broken promises and values land and shelter not for the profit they can create, but the very community already happening. Three dozen people gathered well into the night yesterday to continue planning the next stage for this intentional community in the making.

Tonight, the beginnings of that next stage will be unveiled at 6:30pm. Later on we’ll have a “Victory Circle” open mic, at 10pm.

Many people who can’t camp out have been generous in their contributions, donating tents, food and other supplies. We still have a need for more tents, sleeping pads, food (fruit, water, sandwich fixings..) and art and construction materials. Drop by 7th & Rhode Island Ave NW between 8am and 11pm.

Also, in case you missed them, stories about us by ABC 7 and the Washington Afro.
